During the peak summer weeks on the Outer Banks, nearly 100% of the thousands of rentals are fully occupied, and that means the main road in (and out) means traffic, especially on Saturdays, since many rental homes check-in and check-out days are on Saturday.

We know how awesome it would be to avoid spending any extra time in the car, especially when you are eager to get your vacation started as soon as possible, so we have compiled a list here on the best tips and tricks to avoid traffic while traveling to the Outer Banks.

1.  DO NOT Use local roads if headed to Duck, Corolla, or Carova 4x4. Hwy 12 is the only way to go.

Many travellers think they have figured out a magical cut through that allows them a faster commute into the Northern towns.  Not so fast!  While it's true there is a road that cuts from Croatan Hwy in Southern Shores to Duck Road, it's not any faster.  In fact, not only does this take MUCH LONGER, but also prevents the locals from travelling to and from their homes.  This road is clearly marked with a "Local Traffic Only" sign for this very reason.  We know you wouldn't like hundreds to thousands of tourists cutting through your neighborhood - but in this case, we can tell you with 100% certainty that cutting through local neighborhoods will only DELAY your arrival to these northern towns.

When travelling South on N. Croatan Highway, once you pass over the bridge, you will find yourself in Southern Shores.   In less than 2 miles you will arrive at the intersection in Kitty Hawk.  If you need a break, take the exit to your right into the rest stop for clean bathrooms and a great place to stretch your legs at the Monument to a Century of Flight. From here hop on NC 12 and get ready to enjoy a gorgeous drive North through Southern Shores and Duck making note of the places you will want to come back and visit once you are settled in and ready to experience the plethora of restaurants, shops, and activities you will pass by.

2. Consider Sunday-Sunday or even Partial-Week Vacation Rentals.

If you’ve already booked your Summer vacation, skip this one. While the majority of rentals are Saturday – Saturday, there is still a great selection of vacation rentals that turnover on a Sunday! Traffic is usually much smoother on Sunday vs. Saturday. Rarely do we see back-ups over the bridge on Sunday (incoming or outgoing). View our Sunday – Sunday Rentals. Partial-week vacation rentals are a great way to go, too! You can stay anywhere from 3 to 6 nights and avoid traveling on heavy turnover days like Saturday! View our Partial-Week Homes.

3. Be across the bridge before 11 am.

(11 am in July & 1st 2 weeks in August or 12 pm in June & late August – early September). All other times of year traffic is not an issue.

If you can time it so you are across the Wright Memorial Bridge bridge and onto the Outer Banks BEFORE 11 am, you will miss the majority of the traffic. If you have problems getting stuck on HWY 64 in Virginia, there are plenty of alternate routes. Take a look at Google Maps.

The problem with coming early is you can’t check in until your house is ready, anytime between 4 to 6 pm. You’ve been stuck in a car for a while and you have no place to unload.

But hey, you are here, and you didn't come here to hang out at the house the whole trip, so here are some practical ideas to kill time:

  • Take your time. There are plenty of places to stretch your legs and cool off or grab a bite to eat, as well as unique shopping.  Read our Top Things Worth Stopping For post for ideas, including the H2OBX Waterpark (located just 5.5 miles North of the Wright Memorial Bridge, and trust me, you can't miss it!)
  • Go souvenir shopping! This is the best time to go to local shops and buy souvenirs! Here are some recommendations for shopping:
    1. Corolla,  Tim Buck Too Shopping center
    2. Duck, Scarborough Faire Shopping Center
    3. Kitty Hawk/Southern Shores, Buccaneer Village Shops at MP 4
    4. Nags Head/South Nags Head, Kitty Hawk Kites at Jockey’s Ridge, Tanger Outlets, or Outer Banks Mall
  • Putt-Putt, Dowdy Park, The Wright Brother's Memorial, and Aviation Park
  • Go to the beach. Find a public beach access close to your check-in office and soak up the sun until you receive the text that your rental home is ready for you!

4. Request Early Check-In

Early check-in does not let you skip the traffic (wouldn’t that be great!?), but if you purchase early check-in AND you arrive before 11 am (or 12 pm), you can grab a bite to eat and start off on your vacation! A limited number of early check-ins are available for a fee. If available, you’ll be able to get into your home by 1 pm. If the home isn't larger than 6 bedrooms, you can request this on your vacation rental agreement. Once you submit it back we will email you a confirmation to let you know if it is available.

5. Arrive after 6 pm

The Saturday Summer traffic is at its worst from 12 pm – 4 pm, but it will occasionally linger until after 5 pm. If you need to kill time on your drive down, again, we encourage you to check out some of these great places to stop on your way to the beach

Keep in mind traffic is only an issue on Saturdays (and some Sundays) during the prime Summer months (mid-June through mid-August). Any other day/time, you can sail across the bridge in either direction going the normal speed limit!

We hope this information helps you get here a little bit sooner!  If you haven't booked your Outer Banks vacation, you can start your search right now!
