Hi! So you saw the post on social media? Yup, it was a good one! Looks like quite a few folks got a good laugh from our April Fools’ joke—we call that a win!
If you’ve landed here after April Fools' Day, we hope you still caught the humor we intended. And while we have your attention, we wanted to share some genuinely helpful info about permits that actually are necessary when visiting the Outer Banks.

As for the sand permit? Nope, not a thing. Luckily, walking on the beaches of the Outer Banks is totally free. But different towns do have specific ordinances about how to beach—especially when it comes to where you can park (and where you definitely shouldn’t).
Here’s a quick link to each town’s rules and ordinances:
Carova Beach • Corolla • Duck • Southern Shores • Kitty Hawk • Kill Devil Hills • Nags Head • South Nags Head
And here's where you can find all the beach accesses: beachrealtync.com/outer-banks-beach-access
Keep in mind that the towns of Duck and Southern Shores have more restricted beach access and parking is limited to those with permits. If you're staying in one of these towns, be sure to check with your rental provider or HOA for details about beach access.
Regardless of which town you’re visiting, we also recommend checking out our fun and informative post on Staying Safe on the Beach!
