Back in 2005, a legendary seafaring leisure-seeker named Bernie washed ashore on the beach just north of Avalon Pier – barefoot and sunburnt – when his boat was destroyed just offshore during Hurricane Ophelia.
With little money in his pockets and no shoes on his feet, Bernie began cooking up some of his favorite tropical dishes for the locals, and his legacy continues to this day in the Kitty Hawk restaurant that bears his name.
