In the winter of 1964, Kitty Hawk Realty and Rentals started in the den of Tom and Marge Cafferty’s four-bedroom house at the 4 milepost in Kitty Hawk. The company consisted of fifty rental houses (all oceanfront, as no one would rent anything else), one full-time staff member, and some creative ideas to manage summer rentals for cottage owners. Kitty Hawk Rentals has been a progressive force in real estate on the Outer Banks since its beginning. The company responded to the business's very active sales and construction aspect by changing the company name to the all-inclusive “Kitty Hawk Realty” in the early 70s.
After several location changes, the Kitty Hawk Realty staff settled on a flat-top oceanside building in Kill Devil Hills as the central reservation and sales office in 1975, with an inventory of approximately 150 rental properties. They would remain in this location for the next 39 years.

On the Fourth of July 1979, Jimbo Ward and an associate started J&B Realty, a Realty World franchise. Within the year, they added custom construction to the general real estate services. At that time, Jimbo already had eight years of construction experience on the Outer Banks.
In 1982, the company changed its name to Beach Realty & Construction, becoming a fully independent real estate firm, and built its headquarters in Kitty Hawk (where it still resides).
